Metoclopramide, otherwise known as Reglan, is commonly used to treat patients with gastrointestinal problems. Reglan is supposed to increase stomach contractions, help with digestion and provide temporary relief for heartburn.
However, it has discovered that there is a serious risk with taking Reglan. Some users of the drug have come down with Tardive Dyskinesia, a severe disorder that causes people to move muscles and body parts in an involuntarily fashion. These are usually irreversible even after discontinued use of Reglan. At this time, there is no known cure for Tardive Dyskinesia.
With Tardive Dyskinesia, people display symptoms such as protruding their tongues, smacking their lips, bulging or blinking their eyes, grimacing, pursing and puckering their lips, moving their arms and legs and moving their fingers constantly. There is physical pain associated with Reglan and Tardive Dyskinesia as well. About 250,000 to 400,000 people in the U.S. are believed to have Tardive Dyskinesia.
Some have contracted Dystonia Tardive which is another movement disorder. The involuntary movements are much slower with this disorder than with Dyskinesia Tardive. They are also more painful and twisting, causing those with Dystonia Tardive to experience a lot of pain. With Tardive Dyskinesia, the movements are more rapid and jerky.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has administered a black box warning on Reglan’s drug labels telling users about the risk of long-term use of the drug and the side effects. A black box warning is the strongest the FDA can administer.
Having Tardive Dyskinesia can lead to a painful existence for the sufferer, physically, financially and emotionally. First, the constant and involuntary movements can result in physical pain for the patient. Also, anyone who has this disorder cannot function in society as they normally would. People tend to make fun of those with this disorder because the movements look strange to them. This is common when people do not fully understand why a person behaves or reacts the way they do. However, this can lead to social isolation, which can be emotionally painful for the sufferer. In addition, they usually cannot be a productive member of the workforce and therefore are unable to sustain themselves financially. Then they have to depend upon others and that can lead to even more strain.
As a result of users of Reglan contracting these disorders, some have sought out the services of a Reglan lawyer. They are taking the makers of Reglan to court to seek compensation for their losses. Some law firms are educating their attorneys on Reglan and the disorders associated with it so they can be better prepared to fight for a person’s rights in a litigation situation.

Dyskinesia Tardive can socially isolate people and prevent them from holding regular jobs. For those who suffer from this terrible disorder, life can be a painful experience, both physically and emotionally. However, there is help with a Reglan lawyer. They can help those with Tardive Dyskinesia get compensation.
